Our Story
It all began with a joke. One night, Rachel tossed out the idea of selling candles as a way to bring in extra income. Corban paused, felt it in his spirit, and realized it wasn’t an accident—this was exactly what they were supposed to do. What started as a lighthearted comment quickly became a calling.
Both Rachel and Corban have always had entrepreneurial hearts. The thrill of building something from scratch, paired with the unexpected complexity of candle-making—the science of wax, wicks, and fragrance—pulled them in. It was challenging to find the time at first, juggling full-time jobs and limited capital, but they pressed forward, testing, learning, and pouring each candle with determination.

Faith has guided them every step of the way. God has placed synchronicities and confirmations in their path, reminding them that this journey is part of His plan. That trust has carried them through the late nights and long hours, helping them lean not on their own strength but on His.
For Corban, the vision extends beyond candles. Competitive swimming shaped his life, instilling discipline, teamwork, and joy. Having taught others to swim, he knows the freedom it gives—and dreams of opening a swim school where children and adults alike can discover that same independence. Rachel, who never learned to swim herself, knows firsthand the importance of that mission. Together, they see The Smoldering Wick as a bridge toward making that dream a reality.
Their past has toughened them. Both have walked through seasons where giving up wasn’t an option—children were depending on them. That grit, forged in hardship, now fuels their drive to create a better future for their family.
The vision is bigger than business. They dream of The Smoldering Wick becoming part of people’s everyday lives—candles that bring comfort, spark memories, and transform spaces into places of connection and rest. They also feel called to give back: supporting families in need with healthy food, encouraging children with cerebral palsy (inspired by their own son’s journey), and investing in their community.
The name itself carries layers of meaning. After weeks of searching for the right fit, they wanted something that felt timeless, like an old tavern or inn—a hub of warmth and gathering. The Smoldering Wick felt both raw and hopeful. Rooted in faith, it ties back to Isaiah 42:3: “A smoldering wick He will not snuff out.” It’s a reminder that no matter how dim someone’s flame may feel, there is still hope. God still restores.
For Rachel and Corban, this is more than candles. It’s family, faith, and legacy. It’s working side by side with their children today—and one day their grandchildren—to build something lasting. It’s freedom to live fully, to thrive in health, and to teach their kids what’s possible when you persevere.
The Smoldering Wick is their way of offering comfort and light, from their hands to your home, reminding every person who lights a wick: your story matters, your flame is not forgotten, and the glow always remains
